What to Expect: Kindergarten

We have chapel each school day. Chapel includes scripture memory, geographical prayer focus, and hymns.  We recite in chapel once each semester.

Special classes are P.E., Music, and Art.  We have P.E. daily.  We have art first semester culminating with the Art Show.  We have music the second semester and share what we’ve learned with parents.

We read Bible stories from The Big Picture Bible, Wee Sing Bible Songs CD, and King James Version Bible

Memory work  includes:

  • Books of the Bible
  • Continents
  • Handwriting Chant
  • Selected verses
  • Oceans of the World
  • Punctuation Song

Units we study are based on our literature:

Teacher chapter book read alouds may include: Winnie-the Pooh, The Five Little Peppers, Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, Beatrix Potter, selected fairy tales.

Children are exposed to poetry through A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Students progress through a series of phonics-based readers at their own pace, individually proceeding to other books as ready.  Advanced books include The Little Bear Treasury, A Picture for Harold’s Room, and Owl at Home.

We read a variety of outstanding literature to the children through the Five In a Row curriculum. Science, geography, and history study are based on the books we read each week.  We supplement science with home readings from The Nature Reader by Kramer, Bass, and Wright.

We lay foundations for spelling, reading, and writing by learning to read and write single letter phonograms and how to mark them in words.  We use Handwriting Without Tears Letters and Numbers for Me as the basis for handwriting instruction.

In Math we use Math in Focus: The Singapore ApproachKindergarten A and Kindergarten B. We use a variety of “hands-on” experiences with manipulatives along with our unique calendar binders to help students grasp concepts from the concrete to the abstract.

Daily, we spend 20-30 minutes outside, weather permitting.  Each Kindergarten student is asked to bring a healthy snack every day.

We have 45 minutes of center time where the children may choose from a variety of learning activities.

  • Draw waterlilies at UMHB
  • Feed ducks at the creek
  • Bake apple pies
  • 100th Day of School celebration
  • Arctic animal project
  • Guest juggler
